Georgia Rose Schofield fronts Chinchilla Magistrates Court after police attack and wilful damage

A Western Downs woman had to be sedated after punching and kicking a police officer, injuring them in a violent attack, and broke down in tears as she was dealt with for the matters.

A mother of three who attacked a police officer while authorities were trying to help her, before she headbutted the wall of a hospital, broke down in court while her matters were dealt with.

Georgia Rose Schofield appeared in Chinchilla Magistrates Court on October 12 after she assaulted and injured a Western Downs police officer.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said on September 14 the woman, who had already been in police custody, was being transported to Chinchilla Hospital and detained for an examination.

“There was an allocated room where police asked her to walk into and she started to resist,” Sergeant Brady said.

“She stormed in and hit her head against the wall multiple times causing a hole in the wall.

“Police restrained the woman, she attempted to punch an officer and missed and while restraining her with handcuffs she kicked a police officer in the upper leg causing pain and discomfort.”

The court was told the woman had to be sedated and the following day when she spoke to police she provided no lawful reason to the assault.

Defence lawyer Brad Skuse said there had been concerns for the woman’s mental health which is why she was taken to hospital.

“My client was somewhat unaware as to why she was being held by police and didn’t think she had committed an offence,” he said.

“One of the issues that has been identified has been a lack of stability, she was staying with her partner’s parents and there was a request she leave.”

The parents of Schofield’s partner attended Chinchilla court during the woman’s matters and were repeatedly berated by their son, for being there with the man yelling at them outside of the courthouse causing security to intervene and de-escalate the matter.

Acting magistrate Andrew Walker emphasised that the officers were simply trying to help the woman as she continued to cry.

“It’s the way you reacted which caused the problem,” he said.

“The police officer was just trying to do their duty and what you have done is cause an injury.”

Schofield pleaded guilty to serious assault of an officer and wilful damage.

She was fined $1500 and ordered to pay compensation of $800 to fix the hospital wall.
