A man who stole a pair of headphones from Harvey Norman has told police he “saw an opportunity and took it”.
Bradley James Riley, 31, faced Dalby Magistrates Court on Tuesday pleading guilty to theft and breaching a bail order following incidents on November 19 and December 10, 2024.
The court was told on November 19, Riley entered Dalby’s Harvey Norman and walked to the electronic section before placing a $398 pair of headphones down his pants and walking out of the store.
Riley was captured on CCTV exiting the store with police using the footage to promptly identify and arrest him.
Following the arrest Riley told police he had sold the stolen headphones and when asked why he said “times are tough”.
He also told police he had “seen an opportunity and took it”.
Riley was placed on a bail order on December 4 which prevented him from entering Harvey Norman and required him to check in with police which he failed to do on December 10 resulting in him being charged with a breach of bail.
During sentencing Riley told he court he had simply forgotten to check in with police as he had never been on bail before and described the headphone theft as a “lapse of judgment”.
When sentencing, magistrate Kathleen Payne took into account that Riley had no criminal history and sentenced him to a 12 month, $1500 good behaviour bond and ordered him to pay the $398 in restitution for the headphones.
No conviction was recorded.
