COOL conditions and windy weather could not slow down Dalby’s junior soccer stars on Saturday.

Football Dalby was the host of round two of this year’s Challenge Cup, a five-round competition for 12-16-year-olds played among Dalby, Chinchilla, Wondai, Nanango and Kingaroy.

The Challenge Cup was held for the first time last year and proved to be extremely successful.

Justine Boshammer, co-ordinator of 12-16 age groups, said the carnival had been highly successful.

“It’s a great friendly competition, and our new players are having some scoring opportunities; one brand new girl in the U12s scored goals in both games,” she said.

“It also provides a carnival like atmosphere, which these age groups don’t necessarily usually get.”

Each team played multiple games throughout the day and Dalby’s teams were all looking strong.

The U12 Saints had one 1-all draw against Can do Landscape Supplies Nanango Panthers and one 1-0 win against Dugie’s Driver Training Nanango Panthers.

The U13 Dalby Wanderers had bigger margins, with one 3-0 win over Dugie’s Driver Training Nanango Panthers and one 2-0 loss to Sellwood Construction Bears.

Dalby’s U14-16 Cadets, Dalby Phoenix had one 2-0 loss to Conpak Earthmoving Rednecks Kingaroy and one 1-0 loss to SB Window Tinting Kingaroy Rednecks.

The team’s defence was strong and wind affected many of their goal scoring opportunities.

Mrs Boshammer said the competition offered the Dalby players a welcome change from their regular games against Chinchilla.

“It was first devised to provide players with more competitions,” she said.

“The Dalby teams only usually play Chinchilla every week, so this was created to give the South Burnett region and Dalby and Chinchilla kids more competition and experience and playing other teams in a fun and friendly environment,” she said.

The third round of the Challenge Cup will be held in Nanango on June 18.

Football Dalby would like to thank Isuzu for their sponsorship support.

The club’s next major event will be a clinic with the Brisbane Roar on June 24.
