A NEW Clinical Education Centre opened its doors at Dalby Hospital on Wednesday, November 14.
The centre was created in partnership with Queensland Rural Medicine Education, Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, and Griffith University.
Griffith Pro Vice Chancellor (Health) Professor Sheena Reilly and MP David Littleproud officially opened the centre.
Both spoke about the importance of education in rural health.
"The opening of this new training facility is important because the more exposure to regional and rural medicine training a junior doctor has, the more likely they are to stay in our communities,” Mr Littleproud said.
The centre, built in what was originally the Dalby Hospital Maternity Wing, features a tutorial room, four study pods, and videoconferencing facilities that connect back to Griffith University's Gold Coast Campus.
"The development of these facilities is important in rural areas because they enable vital inter-professional learning hubs for our Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health professionals,” Prof Reilly said.
Mr Littleproud said that the centre would not only provide a great opportunity for Griffith medicine students to gain experience, but would also be an education hub for DDHHS clinical and non clinical staff.
"I hope the opportunity to complete part of a medical degree in major regional centres such as Dalby will encourage more local students to see medical training as a viable option,” Mr Littleproud said.
The centre was funded in part by Queensland Regional Medicine Education ($50,000), Darling Downs Hospital and Health Services ($40,000) and Griffith University
($230,000).
