The Dalby Diehards have celebrated the unofficial start to their season with the return of the Dalby Diehards Race Day.

Taking place at the Dalby and Northern Downs Jockey Club on Saturday, guests dressed to impress in their best beach outfits with boardies, Hawaiian shirts and sundresses on display.

A major fundraiser for the club, the race day included calcutta and bunya challenges, live entertainment, the XXXX Gold, Weet-Bix and cold pie ‘Iron Diehard’ Challenge and jumping castle, snow cones and face painting for the kids.

President Dan Manley hailed the event a success.

“It went extremely well, we are in our second year of holding it, it was well attended with about 400 people and was bigger than the year prior,” he said

“It was a great event, really well organised it went off without a hitch, beautiful weather and great racing, everything we could’ve hoped for.

“It's a fundraiser for the Diehards, we wanted to add an event to the calendar and hopefully it grows in stature over the next few years.”

Mr Manley said outside of the races the real show stopper was the Iron Diehard.

“We had the Iron Diehard which was won by the girls team and it certainly draws the crowds in,” he said.

“They have to drink a hot beer, eat a dry Weet-Bix and eat a cold pie all rolled into a relay with three people on each team, it is really good and we never had any challenge getting people to join in.

“We had a concussion come out of the event with an accidental shoulder to the chin and that might of brought a bit of lunch up but outside of that I think everyone else managed to stomach it.”

Mr Manley said the race day was an important fundraiser for the club and they would look to continue it into the future.

“It goes towards the upkeep of the club our expenses are getting higher and higher every year so we have to find new ways to get extra income for the club and we found this one to be a successful way to bring some money into the club,” he said.

“It is probably our unofficial launch, it is compulsory for all players to come, so it is very well patronised by the playing group and the supporters, the 200 club are big supporters of the Diehards and they have a presence there as well.”

“We’d like to thank the race committee for all of their help and we look forward to hosting it again next year.”
