DOMESTIC violence awareness was the topic at the White Ribbon breakfast on Friday, November 23 hosted by Dalby Rural Supplies.

White Ribbon ambassadors spoke in an effort to better educate attendees.

Sergeant Annie Johnston is the Domestic and Family Violence coordinator with the Queensland Police for the south west police district.

Sgt Johnston said part of her role is to follow up where possible with a referral to a service provider who might be able to help.

Some signs of domestic violence include behavioural changes such as becoming withdrawn, lacking self esteem or putting themselves down.

"There's a lot of different little signs that you can see the changes in a person's behaviour that would indicate that something is not right.”

Sgt Johnston implored people not to stand back and say 'it's not my business'.

"It's everyone's business, and the bystanders in domestic violence, if they become active bystanders, they might save a life.”

Sgt Johnston spoke about the stresses of living with drought on not just the farmers, but the community too.

"Because the people of the land have no funds to spend, people who run businesses have no money coming in; it puts pressure across the entire demographic.”

"We understand those pressures. What we want to see is not just that people are looking out for domestic violence, we also really need people to watch out for their mates.”

"Its ok to be not ok.”

"We need to look out for each other.”
