An unlicensed Chinchilla man told police he got behind the wheel illegally because his girlfriend was suffering a medical emergency and he feared she would lose their unborn child.
Korie Peter-Robert Mutch told police his girlfriend was initially driving but when she started having stomach cramps, they stopped at the Dulacca servo and he took over because he feared she was having a miscarriage.
Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said the static site was outside the Dulacca Police Station metres from the fuel station and officers never saw the car pull in.
“Initially he stated he didn’t have his licence on him but he was driving because his girlfriend was having a miscarriage,” Sergeant Hutchins said.
“Police immediately offered to call an ambulance but that was denied.
“Effectively police didn’t believe him because of the holes in the story.”
Sergeant Hutchins said Mutch’s actions on Monday, August 21, accompanied by the fact he was a repeat offender, would have crushing consequences because he faced a disqualification period of two to five years.
Mutch said he knew what he did was wrong and admitted he should have called an ambulance instead of driving.
He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified by a court as a repeat offender.
Magistrate Kerri O’Callaghan disqualified Mutch from driving for two years and fined him $750.
“It gets worse from here on in. If you do it again, you’re looking at fines not being within range,” Ms O’Callaghan warned.
