Ian Norman James Excell fronts Chinchilla court for drunken rage outburst in Miles

A concreter was so loaded he started a fight with a Miles ATM, with the machine coming out on top after its attacker was fined $2k over the violent clash.

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said the tradie, Ian Norman James Excell, was so drunk by 7.40pm on Saturday, May 15, that he didn’t remember booting the Mitre 10 ATM four times.

Sergeant Hutchins said just under an hour later Excel caught the eye of officers as he stumbled down Murilla Street, although after being stopped for a quick licence check he was sent on his merry way.

The crime didn’t catch up to the 32-year-old until police received CCTV footage on May 19.

Sergeant Hutchins said when Excell was questioned by officers he said he’d only visited the Western Downs town once and had no memory of the violent outburst.

“It’s seems to be a random act with no explanation,” he said.

Defence lawyer Jessica Hine said Excell last committed a crime in 2016 and had no history of similar offending.

“It was minor… a conviction could affect his work,” she said.

Excell pleaded guilty at the Chinchilla Magistrates Court to wilful damage.

Magistrate Kerri O’Callaghan ordered the single man to pay $2174 in restitution and placed him on a good behaviour bond for six months.

No conviction was recorded.
