After dinner time on a Tuesday night, Georgie Marie Howlett walked through Chinchilla Woolworths stuffing two bags with $203.30 worth of groceries that she had no intention to pay for.
Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins told the Chinchilla Magistrates Court Howlett rushed through the self-checkout and out of the store on May 26, despite being followed.
“She’s dropped the bags on the ground and ran towards a gold coloured vehicle,” he said.
“It appears the property was recovered.”
Sergeant Hutchins said although Howlett didn’t have a history of dishonesty crimes, the Chinchilla woman did have a significant criminal history.
Solicitor Michael Corbin asked magistrate Kerri O’Callaghan not to record a conviction, stressing the crime had been out of “need, not greed”.
“At the time of the offence my client was not even receiving Centrelink benefits,” he said.
“Since then she has been able to attain work.”
Howlett pleaded guilty to attempting to steal and was fined $350 by Magistrate O’Callaghan.
A conviction was not recorded.
