AFTER two difficult years of drought forced Chinchilla woman Tenelle ter Rahe to sell several of her beloved show horses, the results from the national paint horse show in Tamworth were extra sweet.
Ms ter Rahe has returned home from The Paint Horse Association of Australia National Show in Tamworth with four national titles.
She said she always loved riding and competing but it wasn't until she stumbled upon the breed that her passion was taken to an entirely new level.
After spending most of her teens eventing, ter Rahe suffered a fall and ended up having a hip reconstruction, losing her confidence horseback along the way.
"After I lost everything, I thought to myself, 'I'm going to take on something relaxed and easy' and I ended up owning a really phenomenal solid paint horse who helped me gradually gain my confidence back,” she said.
"My next paint horse was the loudest, biggest show diva you've ever seen and she was the best show horse I've ever dealt with.
"She's now down in Victoria winning everything she enters and my love and passion for paints has just exploded from her.”
The ter Rahes, along with rider Rachel Jacobson and their two stunning paint horses, George and Cookie, have returned from nationals with four titles including National Champion 2-3-year-old paint bred colt, national suitability for dressage, national champion lead hack and national champion four years and over stallion.
"We squealed like kids when we receiving the four titles, I did a little happy dance in the grandstand,” ter Rahe said.
"The drought has destroyed us. As a horse stud we've gone from 18 horses to five and my feed budget hasn't changed.
"Because of what we've had to sacrifice, these wins mean even more to us.”
Despite his impressive imported blood lines and newfound status as a national title holding paint horse, ter Rahe said at the end of the day he was still just "their George”.
"To justify himself Australia wide has just been so lovely,”
