Fishing for a winner at Miles comp

Anglers welcomed to round one of the Western Downs Carp Busters competition .

FISHING: A frigid weekend of "shocking” winds might have kept a few away, but that just meant it was the toughest of the tough who battled it out for supremacy in the Miles Condamine Fishing Club's Western Downs Carp Busters competition.

The first round of the competition featured about 54 competitors of all ages braving the elements for their chance to catch a fish.

One of those stalwart souls was Ipswich's Jason Terelinck, who won three of the four categories: the mystery weight, the most carp and the heaviest carp.

For Terelinck, it was a great weekend despite the wintry weather, as his first venture into the Miles- Condamine area for fishing.

"It's a really pleasant place, there's a lot of opportunities to go fishing, lots of spots around Miles that I didn't even realise were out here,” Terelinck said.

"So it was good to get out here and have a look around.

"We didn't just fish here, we went down to Condamine, out to the Weir, had a good look around, and it's great.”

Terelinck is one half of Pest Fishing Adventures, along with Nicole Whysall.

For the past three years they have travelled the state to attend competitions and fish for pests like carp and tilapia.

"This is just another stop, another feather in our cap, another spot to put on the map,” he said.

He was also impressed with the local club, having sprouted less than a year ago, and called it "critical” for the area.

"It's brought a lot of people into the town and it also promotes awareness for the carp and the pest fishing,” he said.

"If people get involved, the comps will keep happening and they'll be bigger and bigger and that's only good for the area.”

And he had only praise for the event organisers and sponsors, with plans to be back for the Condamine leg of the competition.

Meanwhile club president Peter Delaforce reflected on Sunday afternoon, saying the weekend was a positive.

"(It was) -1C this morning and then just really brisk wind all day so I think it scared a lot of people off, but still it was a good turnout,” Delaforce said.

"A few people stayed out, the yabby races were really good last night, packed the pub out, a bit of live music, so the club made some good money, so that'll help fund the next one and move forward.”

The next round of the Western Downs Carp Busters competition will be held in Condamine from September 14-15.

"So hopefully everyone will go up there and get the lines out so they do catch a lot more carp up there,” Delaforce said.
