CONDAMINE farmers will be among the first in the nation to have their hands on new easy-to-use weather and climate outlook guides in development.
A total of $2.7 million from the government's drought assistance package will fund the joint project carried out between the Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO.
Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud said the guides would gift Australian farmers with crucial climate and weather information to all 56 Natural Resource Management regions.
"The bureau has a wealth of information farmers need and this will put it in their hands,” Minister Littleproud said.
"Reliable climate information helps farmers make the best decisions they can to manage risks.
"It will help them better understand temperature and rainfall ranges, frost risk, the onset and length of wet seasons, water storage levels and the likelihood and severity of drought, natural disasters and cold snaps.”
Constituting part of the government's ongoing and long-term drought response, the first guides under development will be for Condamine, Mallee, West Gippsland and Riverina.
Representatives of the local agricultural industry had the opportunity to provide their input into the development of the local guides last Thursday at a workshop held in Dalby.
Mr Littleproud attendanded and said the session allowed Condamine farmers to tell the Bureau what information was most valuable for them and how to best deliver it.
"This will mean farmers won't have to rely on guess work to make decisions that affect their livelihoods,” he said.
"This is particularly important during a drought like the one we're currently going through.”
The guides, which are expected to be up and running by early next year, will be trialled online with the bureau taking feedback from farmers to make sure it hits the mark.
