CHINCHILLA has been greeted with a band of dust pushing in from the west.

Extending across a large portion of southwest Queensland, the dust haze is expected to clear potentially tomorrow, a Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said.

"Now and the next two to three hours will be the worst of it,” he said.

"After a few hours, it will have mostly pushed through the Chinchilla area.”

The usual health precautions for dust storms have been advised by the Queensland Ambulance Service.

Advice on heat waves was also given by Queensland's acting chief health officer Dr Sonya Bennett at a press conference this morning.

"The forecast over the next few days indicates extreme weather conditions that could place communities at risk, including heat waves and fires, as well as potential dust and smoke effects,” Dr Bennett said.

"A large proportion of the state is affected by heat and extreme heat where records are being broken.

"Heat can be very severe, and pose a health risk for everybody when we see these temperatures, but particularly the young, the elderly and those with chronic conditions.

"We'd like to remind people to make sure that they're drinking fluids, particularly cool water, to stay hydrated and checking colour of their urine, which is a good indicator for how well hydrated they are.

"Limit any strenuous activity outdoors, and seek shelter inside if you can, in other cool areas, or in air conditioning if it is available,” she said.
