SURAT residents have been advised to keep boiling their tap water after a boil water alert on Tuesday.
Maranoa Regional Council issued the alert after a fault occurred at the Surat Water Treatment Plant, causing non-potable water to enter the water storage reservoirs, affecting the Surat water supply.
In the update council said bottled water was available at the Cobb and Co Changing Station for residents to collect.
Council staff will be available to distribute the water today until 4pm, Monday from 12 noon-2pm and Tuesday from 9am-4.30pm.
"Council would like to remind Surat residents that consuming unboiled drinking water could lead to illness, especially for vulnerable people (e.g. those who are very young, elderly or immune compromised)," the alert said.
"If you are concerned about your health please contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84), your local doctor or local hospital and advise them of your concerns."
People should use cooled boiled water or bottled water for:
-drinking
-brushing teeth
-washing and preparing food or beverages
-preparing baby formula
-making ice
-bathing infants.
Unboiled drinking water can be used for:
-showering and bathing other than infants (but minimise water in the mouth)
-washing dishes by hand or in a dishwasher, provided dishes are air-dried
-washing clothes
-flushing toilets.
The update also provided an explanation for "relatively poor water pressure" in the raw water system.
"The lower pressure being experienced is because there are two raw water pumps and one pump is more efficient than the other," it said.
"The more efficient pump has burnt out a seal therefore we are operating on the less efficient pump. This explains why we are experiencing lower pressure.
"We are engaging pump specialists to repair the pump as a matter of urgency. Please be patient with us as we are dependent on external contractors.
"You can help alleviate stress on the system by complying with the watering schedule and ensuring your taps are turned off when not in use."
