Communities in the region are being given a leg up to become more environmentally friendly through a groundbreaking program sponsored by Western Downs Regional Council.
Organisations are encouraged to apply for the recycle market enviro-grants funding allocations, which was delivered in partnership with council’s waste and recycling contractor IOLAR operational services.
Councillor Andrew Smith said the program was an opportunity to give back to the community and promote the importance of being sustainable.
“The enviro-grants program was made possible thanks to our residents recycling, reusing and upcycling second-hand goods at our recycling market shops at Dalby, Chinchilla, and Miles Waste and recycling centres,” Cr Smith said.
“A massive 40 per cent of the money raised at our tip shops is reinvested into the program to support various environmental initiatives across the Western Downs.”
Chinchilla Community Kindergarten director Sarah Waters said council’s enviro-grants provided the opportunity to make sustainable improvements to the kindy.
“We were successful in receiving an enviro-grant last round, which enabled us to install solar panels on the building roof,” Mrs Waters said.
“These projects make a significant different to our operating costs and allow us to be more environmentally aware.”
Applications are open and will close on September 30, 2021.
