Record-breaking bull sale funds Lachlan Hughes’ legacy
One of the heaviest bulls to come through the Roma saleyards has raised thousands for the Lachlan Hughes Foundation, which supports innovators in regenerative agriculture

THE BIGGEST bull to come through the Roma Saleyards in recent years has weighed in at 1290kg and raised a whopping $3769.38 for charity this week, in an auction supporting the Lachlan Hughes Foundation
Sold alongside a steer donated by Augathella graziers Peter and Isabella Elms, the charity auction raised a grand total of $6198.66 in the memory of Hughes: a young man who sadly passed in an on-farm accident in October last year.
Hughes was a passionate grazier and lover of the land; in his life he was an advocate for regenerative agriculture on his Dulacca property, and his parents are carrying on his legacy through the charity, which is supporting innovators in regenerative ag.
“We started up the foundation in his memory, and to try and promote regenerative ag,” Lachlan’s father Phillip Hughes said.
“We have a scholarship that will fund someone who is a future leader in the field, and it will be project-based.
“We will design some training around what that particular person is doing, and also run their project; the foundation will pay for that training, so they can do courses to support their project, and they will be given a mentor and access to a network of people in their area.
“The whole idea is to try and get regenerative ag on the forefront in the west.”
Lachlan was developing regenerative practices for his own grazing land, and believed it was possible to rebuild the soils, and increase their sustainable productive capacity to withstand the drought.
As his legacy, the foundation aims to support people who are motivated to get out and do projects, and champion regenerative ag.
The Lachlan Hughes Foundation will be taking scholarship applications in December.
