Western Downs Regional Council is empowering communities to be more environmentally friendly, with applications now open for this year’s Recycle Market Enviro Grants funding program.

Chinchilla Community Kindergarten director Sarah Waters said the council’s program provided the centre with the opportunity to make viable sustainable improvements to the kindy.

“We were successful in receiving an Enviro Grant last round, which enabled us to install solar panels on the building roof,” Mrs Waters said.
“These projects make a significant difference to our operating costs and allow us to be more environmentally aware.”

Western Downs councillor Andrew Smith said the program was a great opportunity to give back to the community and promote the importance of being sustainable.

“The Enviro Grants Program is made possible thanks to our residents recycling, reusing and upcycling second-hand goods at our Recycling Market Shops at Dalby, Chinchilla, and Miles Waste and Recycling Centres,” Mr Smith said.

“A massive forty per cent of the money raised at our tip shops is reinvested into the program to support various environmental initiatives across the Western Downs.

“Council is committed to empowering communities to develop local initiatives and this grants program has supported fantastic initiatives in the past such as feral animal monitoring equipment, solar panels, and watering systems and equipment.”

Applications for the program will close on September 30, 2021.
