Up to 700 hundred current and former students of a rural university could find themselves being visited by debt collectors in the near future.

Central Queensland University, one of Australia’s most widespread rural and public universities, has started accepting expressions of interest from international and domestic debt collection agencies in order to recover the over $1.5 million owed to it.

In their tender to interested parties Central Queensland University staff wrote that the agency’s role would be to collect on outstanding amounts from students, sponsors, commercial and general debtors.

The debt collection service will be provided to CQUniversity entities, including the CQ University bookshop, Capricornia College and CQUniversity Student Association, who are owed an estimated debt of over $1.5 million by between 500 to 700 individuals.

“The estimated AUD value for each of these individual collections range from approximately $500 to $18,000 for debtors, with the majority being in excess of $2000.”

The campuses where collections are expected include but are not limited to Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Emerald, Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

A number of the necessary collections will occur overseas, whether the collections will be made from former international students or businesses is unclear.

Student debtors will have their student ID, name, address and telephone number provided to the collection agency who will collect upon the debt within three months of receiving the information.

CQUniversity have been contacted for comment.
