A Central Queensland man who threatened to “put a hole” between another man’s eyes, has been jailed.
Appearing in custody, Danyon Lester Bennett, 30, was sentenced in Gladstone Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to 11 charges including using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
The court heard that on May 19 last year, Bennett sent numerous threatening text messages to the victim, a Moranbah man, and also left him threatening voice messages.
It was told some of the things Bennett said to the victim were: “I’m going to put a hole between your eyes, c***. I’ll find you. I’ll be in Moranbah in two hours. I hope you know I’m being dead serious, mate.”
The court heard the victim contacted police, telling them he feared for his safety and that of his family, and they were scared to leave their house.
In relation to some of Bennett’s other offences, the court was told they occurred while he was on a suspended sentence.
Bennett, who had an eight-page criminal history, had spent 61 days in pre-sentence custody.
Solicitor Stephen White said the head sentence could attach to the using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend offence.
He said Bennett came from a close-knit family and once he was released from custody, he had work prospects as a concreter or at a cattle station.
Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Bennett to 12 months’ jail, activated the suspended sentence in full to be served cumulatively, declared 61 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, and fixed parole release at April 20, 2025.
She also fined him $1050 and convictions were recorded.
