Dumped puppies rescued from middle of Warrego Highway

TWO pups dumped to die have been rescued from the middle of the Warrego Hwy. The search is now on to find them a home.

A FORMER veterinary nurse says it "curdles her blood" to see domestic pets left for dead by careless owners.

Penney and her partner Luke discovered two puppies on the Warrego Hwy near Brigalow last Monday.

I don't know how people can do it," she said.

"We have a lot of animals - they're our children."

Both dogs were extremely malnourished when they were found. They were eating a dead kangaroo to stay alive.

The couple took the animals back to their Warra property and nursed them back to health.

"Hopefully we'll get some condition on them," Penney said.

"They are still very skinny."

Penney smothered the two dogs in insect repellent to kill the fleas swarming all over their bodies.

"I've never seen so many fleas on an animal," she said. "You couldn't see their heads from all the fleas."

Both are now bathed, wormed, and treated for fleas.

Penney said both dogs had a lovely nature and were doing extremely well after regular food.

Penney and Luke are now looking to find a good home for the black puppy.

"We'd keep them but we've already got three dogs," she said.

"I won't see them put down - I'm too kind."
