Just weeks after a Central Queensland teenager was killed in a two vehicle crash on the Peak Downs Highway, students from across the region have led the latest road safety campaign, urging drivers to remain cautious and alert on regional and rural roads.
Road Safe Moranbah – a road safety awareness group created after a fatal crash – recently launched its mobile road safety campaign at Moranbah’s Red Bucket.
Students from schools throughout Isaac region were asked to come up with road safety designs, which would be featured on the back of Greyhound buses used across the district and surrounds.
Forty-two buses travelling to Rockhampton, Blackwater, Moranbah and Mackay will have the designs on them.
The winning designs were from Middlemount State School, Moranbah State School, Moranbah East State School, Nebo State School, Glenden State School, Dysart Arts and Coppabella State School.
Senior Sergeant Adam Dyer said the message would be seen by thousands of motorists, reminding them to always think of the fatal five every time they get into a car.
“This campaign will be a constant reminder to drivers on our roads to remember the fatal five and always drive to the road conditions,” he said.
“Being designed by children should also show that road safety really is everybody’s responsibility.
“The initiative is a great example of how working together as a group and as a community can really take the road safety message to a much wider audience.
“It has been great to see the drive and passion from so many people to make this campaign happen.”
Road Safe Moranbah is a group that was formed in November, 2020 after a fatal traffic crash on the Peak Downs Highway near Moranbah.
The group brings together representatives from across the Moranbah community all with the same goal of raising awareness about road safety and making the roads safer for everyone to use.
Road Safe Moranbah consists of representatives from BHP, Anglo American, Greyhound Resources and Vitrinite along with QPS, QAS, QFES, Isaac Regional Council, Road Accident Action Group and community radio station 4RFM all represented.
