BLOCKS of land could be on the market at Kings Forest by as early as late next year after the mega residential development at Kingscliff was given the green light by the Federal Government.
Late on Friday, Tweed Shire Council and the developers Leda were advised that the Federal Department of the Environment had signed off on the development subject to 19 special conditions.
It is the last approval required before work can start on stage one of the development with State Government approval already granted.
Special conditions include measures to protect local koalas and also the "rare" Wallum Sedge Frog.
Leda regional manager Reg van Rij said the federal government agency accepted the measures proposed by the company to protect koalas with only minor amendments.
But Leda was required to carry out studies and hire experts in order to mitigate the impact on the local Wallum Sedge Frog population.
Mr van Rij said the approval was "big news" with Kings Forest representing 35% of the current available urban release land in the shire.
Within 15 to 20 years, it is expected that the population in the new town will be around 10,000.
A shopping centre, two schools, and a golf course are planned for the area.
