Eidsvold Golf Club devastated by fire

Fire which has ripped through a storage shed and multiple containers at the Eidsvold club, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

The Eidsvold Golf Club has been devastated by a recent fire, with an estimated $350,00 worth of damage.

The Eidsvold Golf Club was left devastated this week after a fire ripped through a shed and multiple storage containers, with the damage estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At roughly middy on Thursday, April 18, club president and auxiliary fireman Morgan Morice got a call that the club’s storage facilities were up in flames, with emergency services unable to douse the fire before major damage was caused.

Mr Morice said the fire was believed to have spread from a nearby property possibly doing some back burning, with a single ember all that was needed to set alight the storage facilities housing several pieces of machinery filled with fuel.

“Being a warmer day, there would have been some fumes as well, which would have made it go ‘bang’,” he said.

So swift was the fire, which had fully engulfed the structures by the time emergency services arrived, the floorboards of the containers were left undamaged, despite the machinery being left in a skeletal state.

Including the cost of rebuilding the shed itself, the two 6m storage containers sitting nearby, and replacing all lost equipment is estimated to cost at least $350,000.

Multiple storage spaces were devastated by the fire, with six buggies destroyed on top of several pieces of fairway maintenance equipment.

As a result of the fire the club lost six buggies, more than 20 sets of golf clubs and several pieces of specialised fairway maintenance equipment, with the club only recently shelling out several thousands of dollars for the repairs of said equipment.

“A lot of us are pretty devastated, and for the older club members, losing their buggies, that was their life being retired,” he said.

The club has launched a Go Fund Me in the hope of recouping some of the losses, with the question of insurance still uncertain due to the various leases over the grounds dating back to the former Eidsvold council.

While Mr Morice said he did not expect the fundraiser to reach target any time soon, he said the goal was more of a reminder to the community as to just how big the loss was.

Despite this, Mr Morice said the community support since the blaze had been outstanding, with golf clubs across the Wide Bay Burnett putting their hand up to supply temporary equipment to keep the grounds in good shape.
