THE new year might be a good time to change your online password, with internet security firm SplashData announcing the worst passwords of 2015.

Compiled from more than two million leaked passwords during the year, the list shows that internet users are still using insecure passwords, such at 123456 and password.

While longer passwords are making their way on to the list, which SplashData have been compiling for the past five years, the simplicity of the password is making the extra length almost worthless.

While 1qaz2wsx (the first two columns of a standard keyboard) and qwertyuiop (the top row) make their debut on the list, they are based on keyboard patterns that could easily be cracked by a hacker.

The list also shows Star Wars has had an influence on people's password choices, but hackers wouldn't need to use any old Jedi mind tricks to guess them, with starwars, solo and princess making their way onto the list.

SplashData recommends passwords to be 12 characters or more with mixed types of characters.

Avoid using the same password across different websites.

If it's all too complicated, consider using a password manager, such as TeamsID, that can generate random passwords and protect and organise various passwords.
