While some readers say smokers have a right to smoke at home, others are in support of a total ban

Smoking at home may be the final crackdown on the battle against tobacco. We asked locals what they thought, with many in support of the bold idea.

The Cancer Council Queensland is concerned about the number of people being affected by secondhand smoke drift in their own homes.

It's a concern that’s led to a report stating most people living in units would like to see a crackdown on smoking in unit complexes.

We put the question to our readers and this is what they had to say.

For Karen Hansen, it was a flat-out, simple “no”.

Emma Louise Greenwood was also against the idea, asking where smokers were meant to go if they couldn't smoke in their own areas.

“Why not focus on the smog and fumes from cars, that's more dangerous to us than smoke from a cigarette,” she said.

As a non-smoker, Marcus Hiesler said smoking should remain a personal choice.

“Most smokers are actually pretty good, when it comes to not intentionally allowing smoke to blow over others,” he said.

“The little bit that might blow from a unit to another or a house to another is minuscule. Some people need to get a grip.”

But there were readers who agreed with the idea of a ban, with Robert McHugh saying smoking should be banned everywhere.

Viv Stenner said she also backed a total ban.

Others said they were tired of smelling cigarettes from neighbours.

“If you live in a unit and experience the smoke going into your unit at 3am in the morning you would understand why people don't want it in units,” Jewelly Dwyer said.

It's a sentiment shared by Calleja Gruetzner.

“If you're someone living in a multi-complex with children that you don’t want breathing in the smoke you’ll understand,” she said.
