Impressive Kirwan State High School forwards Kaiden Lahrs and Elijah-Shane Tapau are playing their way into Queensland Schoolboys consideration after man of the match efforts at the Queensland Secondary Schools State Championships.
Captain Lahrs, the son of former international prop Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, was destructive from prop in Northern’s 42-10 win over a Darling Downs outfit buoyed by students from Johnathan Thurston’s old school St Mary’s.
Tapau, an edge backrower, was Northern’s best in a 26-16 defeat at the hands of Capricornia, powered by players from St Brendan’s, on Sunday.
Electric hooker Braith Dowson, also a Kirwan product, has been a dangerous threat, coach Steve Lansley said.
“To be honest we’ve played okay,” Lansley said.
“We’ve tried really hard but were outplayed by a better team (Capricornia, on Sunday).
“We knew their spine would be dangerous but they tore us apart in the first half, 16-0, and we had too big a mountain to climb to try overcome that deficit.”
Northern must rebound against Met West on Monday to reach finals on Tuesday.
