Ben Simmons decides to list $4.3 million Philadelphia pad, suggesting divorce from 76ers is all but done

Ben Simmons has delivered bad news to any basketball fans hoping he might stay at the Philadelphia 76ers, as the Aussie star has made a major move that shows how badly he wants out.

In what could be a further proof that Ben Simmons is serious he will never return to play for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Aussie basketball star has put his Philadelphia home up for sale.

The home, one of Simmons two abodes in the area, is located in the Ritz-Carlton Residences of Philadelphia, is up for sale for $4.3 million (US$4.3m), the Inquirer reports.

Simmons reportedly bought the apartment in 2018 for US$2.54 million.

It has become the NBA’s hottest off-season storyline that Simmons does not wish to play for the 76ers again as he seeks a trade — but publicly, team officials like coach Doc Rivers and basketball operations boss Daryl Morey have been holding out hope the Aussie will see the light and stay put despite all the bad blood.

The home, which spans nearly 290 sqm, has three bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms – and comes with two underground car parks, fitness centre and pool access, and valet parking.

Simmons also owns a large house in Moorestown in New Jersey that sits on 1.78 acres. Simmons has reportedly also made upgrades to the home — remodelling the basement, putting in a new kitchen, replacing the flooring and adding a pool.

The 25-year old is refusing to suit up for the Sixers and is boycotting pre-season camp, not turning up to Philadelphia’s first practice match against Toronto on Tuesday. It was revealed yesterday just how much his holdout will cost him.

ESPN reports he was fined approximately $494,000 (US$360,000) for missing the game. That same penalty will be extended for every game Simmons misses from here on out — both in the pre-season and when the campaign proper gets underway later this month.

Simmons won’t be able to get this money back even if he eventually secures the trade he so desperately wants, according to ESPN.

Earlier this year, The Aussie basketball phenom made a huge investment in LA real estate, buying a swish all-black farmhouse in Los Angeles’ Hidden Hills for $23.3 million (US$17.5m).

The Hidden Hills area is famous for its new influx of celebrity money in the recent years — with residents now including professional athletes and hip-hop musicians like Drake and Lil Wayne, — as well as almost all the Kardashian family.

The 6,070 sqm estate boasts seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, two swimming pools, and a separate house-sized guesthouse.

Philly Voice reports Simmons’ camp approached the NBA Players Association to discuss the heavy financial penalty but was told he couldn’t recoup the money that will be taken out of an escrow account that holds the $11.4 million Philadelphia refused to pay Simmons because of his boycott.

Simmons and the 76ers remain at an impasse because the franchise hasn’t been able to agree to a trade package with any other teams it believes compensates it fairly for the loss of a three-time NBA All-Star.
