Two people involved in a shocking alleged hit-and-run southwest of Bundaberg which killed a motorcyclist on the Bruce Highway on Sunday were known to each other, police say.
Ronald Madden, 69, of New South Wales, has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene without obtaining help following the crash which happened about 11.10am.
Initial reports were Mr Madden’s Ford Ranger was travelling north on the Bruce Highway, near Booyal Dallarnil Road, when it struck a motorbike.
The motorbike rider, a 68-year-old from Moranbah, sustained critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Police alleged in a media statement Monday Mr Madden “failed to slow down” when three motorbikes in front of him did in an 80km/h zone, hitting one of them.
The ute was found 4km up the highway from the scene where the driver was “replacing a spare tyre … on the vehicle,” Bundaberg Police Inspector Grant Marcus said.
He said the ute “had a fair bit of damage to the front end”.
“They were known to each other,” he said.
Mr Madden was taken into custody and will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday, November 18.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who has relevant dashcam vision, is urged to come contact police.
