A ‘controlling’ fisherman punched, slashed and stabbed himself before attacking a woman who had suggested breaking up with him.

A court has heard how a fisherman violently abused the woman he’d been dating for two months, after attacking himself with punches and scissors.

Andrew-Keith Robert Lloyd, 31, pleaded guilty to common assault (domestic violence offence) in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday, February 27.

The court heard how in early December 2022, Lloyd’s victim had discussed them breaking up when Lloyd became what police prosecutor Andrew Powis termed “controlling” and refused to leave.

Senior Constable Powis told the court Lloyd became emotional, punching himself in the head and slashing himself with scissors before moving to the kitchen and using a knife to stab himself in the forearm while saying “see what you’ve done, this is all your fault you fat c---”.

When the victim tried to wash the blood away with a hose, she became soaked in water and her attacker’s blood, the court heard.

Lloyd then pulled her up by the hair, starting to drag her, and told her “it’s time, I’m going to finish this, I’m going to kill you”.

Snr Const Powis said the defendant’s actions were controlling and the victim had been forced to seek refuge with neighbours.

At the time of the attack, Lloyd had been on parole for other serious domestic violence offending which had been dealt with by the district court, it was heard.

Defence lawyer Rian Dwyer said his client, originally from the Gold Coast, had worked on fishing boats across the globe and suffered from PTSD and borderline personality disorder.

Lloyd, who had spent 183 days in pre-sentence custody, was handed a sentence of eight months’, wholly suspended for two years.
