Queensland could be set for massive changes as part of landmark treaty negotiations with the state’s First Nations groups – but not everyone is happy.

Voice to Parliament's 'ramifications' for Australia's legal fabric will be 'scary'

Queensland could be set for massive changes as part of landmark treaty negotiations with the state’s First Nations groups.

The watershed Path to Treaty legislation, passed on May 10, means a five-member board called the Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry will investigate the past and look to drive change in the future.

As well as examining the effect of the Stolen Generation and the impacts of colonisation on First Nations and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland, the board will look at potential geographical name changes that are either considered insensitive or were previously known by another name for thousands of years.

The news sparked debate among couriermail.com.au readers, with Rachel Colley writing: “Imagine being angry at the fact that Traditional Land Owners get a say.”

However not everyone agreed it was a step in the right direction.

“The state and the country will be broke in under 10 years!!!! To everyone who applauds this, just remember you wanted this,” Stuart Anthony wrote.

Bruce Weir added: “Unbelievable, no consultation, no notice, no thought for the people of Queensland. All about making someone look good.”

Therese A Houghton called it “pure insanity, utterly ridiculous”.

Todd Adam agreed: “What a load of garbage can’t believe this is even being entertained.”

Caroline Smith claimed it’s time to “stop the stupidity”.

Ryan Lane called for the return of former Queensland premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

“Someone needs to thaw out Joh. Even he did a better job,” he wrote.
