Jackson Elliott McCosh pleads guilty to 32 charges

A former Bundaberg mechanic has been convicted of 32 crimes, including car theft, drugs and six counts of seriously assaulting a police officer who was trying to get him out of the ceiling of a house.

A young Bundaberg man has been released from jail after his “complex web of offending” was heard in court.

Jackson Elliott McCosh, 29, pleaded guilty to 32 charges in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

He appeared via video link from the Maryborough Correctional Facility on charges of breach of bail, failure to appear, obstruct police, possess utensils, receiving tainted property, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of drive uninsured vehicle, three counts of driving without a licence, possess property suspected of having been used in connection with a drug offence, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, two counts of driving uninsured car, evading police, six counts of serious assault of police, vehicles used on roads must be registered, light vehicle must not be driven or parked if defective, four counts of possessing tainted property and using or permitting use of vehicle for which a permit is required.

The court heard the ex-mechanic had also breached a probation order and a parole order when a long string of offending began in late 2022.

Police prosecutor Vicki Kennedy-Grills told the court in September 2022 the father-of-four was intercepted driving a “home-fashioned” motorcycle which was not registered or insured, and he had no licence.

Police found a “small amount of drugs” on McCosh and when they searched his property found a “large quantity of keys” they alleged were stolen.

In October 2022, police tried to intercept McCosh in Bargara after reports he had received a stolen trailer.

“Later that evening, police have attended his home residence to locate him and he was found in the ceiling of the residence hiding from police,” Sgt Kennedy-Grills told the court.

“And there has been a serious assault of police and that’s where [I] submit is the most serious criminality.”

Rian Dwyer appeared for McCosh and told the court the assaulted police officer did not submit a victim impact statement.

“I don’t suggest [the officer] wasn’t hurt as a result of that assault or felt pain, but there is no ongoing injuries,” he said.

Mr Dwyer told the court McCosh was battling a daily drug problem, and during an arrest he was bitten by a police dog on the leg, a “significant” injury which required six follow-up surgeries.

The court heard McCosh was a father of four young children, including an eight-month-old baby he had not met as it had been born while he was in custody.

McCosh was released from custody with 240 days in presentence custody declared time served on a 10 month probation, with convictions recorded on all charges.
