The daughter of a couple whose house went up in flames in the Bundaberg suburb of Avoca on Thursday night said they “lost bedrooms” in the blaze.
The fire broke out in the low-set brick home on Carmen Court just after 7:30pm, with emergency services receiving the first call at 7:44pm.
A total of seven crews, including four fire crews with 14 firefighters, an ambulance and police arrived at the scene to find the house fully engulfed in flames.
The NewsMail understands all occupants got out safely but the home was extensively damaged.
The residents were in the lounge room when they heard the smoke alarm sound at the rear of the house. They went down the hallway where they saw smoke underneath a door and immediately evacuated the home.
The couple’s daughter said while most of the inside of the house was destroyed by the fire, some rooms were still liveable.
“They still have some of their kitchen and living room intact,” she said.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Trevor Farraway said the fire took hold at the rear of the house, engulfing the study and quickly spreading.
“It’s propagated quite quickly and from that room, has spread over into the adjacent room of the left hand side of the house, made its way up through the hallway and up into the front of the house,” he said.
It’s believed a male occupant tried to go back into the house to retrieve items, but was out by the time emergency services arrived.
A fire crew had initially gone inside the home to fight the fire, but were also quickly withdrawn.
“The colour of the smoke went from grey to a black swirling colour which indicates the fire was in the process of flashing over, so I withdrew the crew and moved them to a position of safety outside the structure to fight the fire,” Mr Farraway said.
The ceiling lining at the rear of the house was completely destroyed, and the whole back of the building extensively damaged due to the ferocity of the fire.
The occupants lost a number of items including furniture, bedding and mattresses.
Preliminary investigations conducted by police and firefighters determined the fire started from an old computer attached to a powerboard without an RCD trip on it.
The fire did not damage any neighbouring properties.
Thankfully, the owners are insured.
