QUARTET is the directorial debut for Dustin Hoffman (who stared in films such as Tootsie and Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium).
It stars Billy Connolly and Maggie Smith. The film goes for 98 minutes, but it feels long.
Dustin Hoffman does an appalling job of directing... not good.
He takes you to different places, and the movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a romantic comedy or a dromedy (drama and a comedy). Dustin Hoffman is a great actor, just not a great director.
Maggie Smith explores a different role in this film, and she does the job, but she should stick to where she belongs... comedy.
Billy Connolly is funny, but he just doesn't fit his character.
The script is really bad. Nearly all of the characters are unlikeable, and it gets on your nerves at times.
One minute the script would be charming, and actually good but then they would go into a dark comedy and make them say F-bombs. It doesn't work.
What was the story? The screenwriters didn't know what story to develop until one hour in.
The film is extremely slow moving.
The movie did manage to make me chuckle a couple of times... but a couple isn't enough.
The film gets filled with unnecessary scenes which do nothing towards the story or even character development.
Overall Quartet is at times charming, but at times stupid.
The acting isn't as good as you would expect. But, keep in mind that the target audience is for seniors.
