A drunk driver who crashed on Childers Rd in March received little sympathy in court on Thursday.

Alan Ashley Wilkinson pleaded guilty in Bundaberg Magistrates Court to one count of driving under the influence of liquor.

Police were called to a crash on Childers Rd at 10.30pm on March 26.

When they arrived they saw Wilkinson’s car was in the grass after having crashed into a parked car.

Both vehicles sustained damage.

Wilkinson told officers he had swerved to miss a kangaroo that jumped out in front of him, before he hit the parked car.

He then participated in a breath test and blew a reading of 0.195.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Grant Klaassen told the court Wilkinson had two previous entries in his criminal history which were similar to the charge before the court.

He told the court Wilkinson received probation in 2011 after he blew a reading of 0.113 and was fined in 2010 with a reading of 0.145.

Sergeant Klaassen said Wilkinson was “very fortunate” no one was injured.

Wilkinson, who was self represented, told the court at the time of the crash he was going through “a rough time”.

He told the court before the crash happened he had been drinking with a friend, who he had done a job for through his handyman business.

Wilkinson said he was no longer running his handyman business as a result of losing his licence.

He said he was getting assistance to address his issues with alcohol.

Acting Magistrate Gary Finger took into account Wilkinson’s plea of guilty.

“You were almost four times time limit and you’re lucky you’re still with us and lucky you didn’t kill anyone else,” he said.

Wilkinson was fined $2000 and was disqualified from holding a licence for 14 months.
