A proposed expansion of Splitters Farm, a “glamping” and animal paradise on sprawling grounds near Bundaberg has been approved by the region’s council, however, residents are concerned with the proposed conditions.

At Thursday’s Bundaberg Regional Council meeting, the expansion plans for Splitters Farm, at 205 Blairs Rd, Sharon, were approved after more than a year of delays.

The application, submitted on March 29, 2022, includes significant additions such as a tourist park, tourist attraction, function facility, food and drink outlet, shop and caretaker’s accommodation.

The total cost of the operational work is $13,110, which includes GST, materials and labour.

A required road upgrade to a fully sealed 7m-wide road, mandated by the council, is estimated to cost between $2-3 million, according to legal advice referenced by councillor Jason Bartels.

“Council is not responsible for the cost of the roadworks,” a Bundaberg council spokesperson said.

Splitters Farm owners Ashley and Carly Clark said they were “in negotiations with the council” about the removal of several trees along Blairs Rd, which would be necessary to carry out those roadworks.

Some local residents are reportedly concerned the removal of the trees will affect wildlife and privacy.

Mayor Helen Blackburn and councillor Bill Trevor removed themselves from the vote on the application due to conflicts of interest.

Mr Trevor has relatives who own the farm, and Ms Blackburn received campaign funding from the farm’s owners.

Councillors Deb Keslake, Carmen McEneany, Tracey McPhee, Gary Kirk, and Steve Cooper supported the motion, while Jason Bartels and John Learmonth voted against it.

Splitters Farm has operated as a rural tourism destination since 2018.

Initially, a Development Permit issued on November 26, 2019 allowed for 40 campsites, eight safari tents, and an ancillary cafe.

This was later expanded to 50 sites through a minor change.
