Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers CEO and Qld Horticultural Council chair Bree Watson has been preselected as the Liberal National Party candidate for the seat of Bundaberg at the 2024 state election.

Labor candidate and former teacher Tom Smith won the seat from the LNP at the last state election.

Voted Bundaberg’s most influential person for 2023, Ms Watson is a powerful advocate for the interests of horticulture producers.

She has also represented Bundaberg growers on the SunWater Irrigators Advisory Committee, in which she was critical of the Qld government’s handling of the Paradise Dam restoration.

Ms Watson said as the LNP’s representative for Bundaberg she would be a voice for locals in addressing key issues including youth crime and affordable housing.

Bree Watson (with deputy leader of the opposition Jarrod Bleijie) said she was "proud" to join the LNP team.
Bree Watson (with deputy leader of the opposition Jarrod Bleijie) said she was "proud" to join the LNP team.

‘‘After years of fighting for answers from the Palaszczuk Labor Government on their mismanagement of Paradise Dam, I know how hard it is for locals to feel that their concerns are being heard, and addressed,” Ms Watson said.

‘‘We need a government that’s not afraid to tackle youth crime. We need action to address the cost-of-living crisis, we need a health and hospital system we can truly rely on, we need to and make housing more affordable and accessible.”

LNP Leader David Crisafulli played down the LNP’s prospects at the October 2024 election, but said Ms Watson was well placed to capitalise on a “growing mood for change” in the community for a “tired” third-term Palaszczuk government.

“Bree has a long track record of community service and locals deserve to have one of their own focused on working hard for them,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“We know we are the underdog at the next election but there is a growing mood for change in Queensland from a tired third term government consumed with chaos and crisis of its own making.”

“My team and I look forward to working with Bree to earn her community’s trust and prove the LNP is ready to govern.”
