How many people buy a car after a quick spin around the block?
Given it’s traditionally the second greatest investment behind a home for most people, the buying process is deserving of more thought.
Small things can become daily gripes and minor annoyances the source of continuous frustration.
While the driving experience plays a major role in the decision making, interior fit, finish and features should be equally high on the agenda.
Having spent an extended time in Peugeot’s 3008 GT Sport, it’s a fine example of how small things can become special.
French brands have been renowned for idiosyncrasies and flair. Commonsense and ease of use haven’t typically been among the features list – until now.
Overhauled Peugeots now boast some of the best looking cabins around which makes travel a pleasure.
The 3008 looks and feels like a true prestige product. Classy aluminium dash toggles provide shortcuts to touchscreen operations while other buttons provide quick access to seat heaters and various air flow controls.
Each side of the touchscreen can feature the dual-zone aircon controls.
Once preferred radio stations have been selected among the favourites, a dial on the steering steel provides rapid ability to change.
Throw into the box cupholders that are able to accommodate larger drink bottles and takeaway coffee cups, a nook in front of the stubby gear shifter perfect for your phone and close to the USB port, and it’s a welcoming environment.
Not all manufacturers get these facets right. Many get used to the shortcomings and live with the failings – but with a breadth of models available, buyers should demand better.
When test driving cars, it’s also vital to undertake the mundane daily uses. Park at the shops (the 3008 has a 360-degree camera to ensure you’re within the white lines), place grocery bags inside … the 3008 GT also has a power tailgate with a foot sensor so waving under the rear bumper when you have your hands full opens the boot.
Also try and change the radio bands and stations quickly, it’s amazing how this can be a time-consuming task in many infotainment systems, make phone calls and try the hands free systems. Some are better than others.
Ensuring various interior aspects are easily navigated will ultimately lead to a happier automotive life.
