Fire crews are currently on site battling a reported mulch fire near the Sugar Mill in Bundaberg East.

While crews work to bring the sizeable blaze under control on Cran Street, Queensland Fire Department advises locals that smoke is likely to affect the air quality for several hours.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions, including keeping windows and doors closed to minimise exposure to smoke.

Individuals with respiratory conditions should ensure they have their medication on hand and avoid prolonged exposure to the smoke.

Motorists travelling through the region are urged to drive with extra caution due to reduced visibility.

The Queensland Fire Department will provide further updates as the situation evolves and crews continue to manage the fire.

In a video circulated online, a witness said that the sugar mill in the area is responsible for keeping mulch mounds moist to avoid fire events in particularly hot and dry conditions.

Bundaberg Sugar Mill were contacted for comment and gave no response.
