One-quarter of Queensland’s $1.9bn Olympic Games venues infrastructure will be out to tender by the end of the year as the state forges ahead with construction.

The first expressions of interest to build four 2032 Olympic Games venues will be released by the State Development Minister Grace Grace on Monday.

Expressions for the Sunshine Coast Stadium and Chandler Indoor Sports Centre will be released Monday, while tenders for work on the Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre will be released in August.

Chandler’s Aquatic Centre and the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre will be released in 2025.

The state government said its Q2032 Procurement Strategy would prioritise local businesses and give them the best chance to supply for projects that will support more than 1000 jobs.

The first contracts are due to be awarded later this year.

Early works on the Sunshine Coast Stadium will begin in late 2024 and other construction will begin in 2025.

State Development Minister Grace Grace noted – still more than eight years before the Games – one quarter of the $1.87bn Minor Venues Program would be out in the market in the coming months.

“Queensland’s golden decade of opportunity is here and we’re making the most of it to deliver lasting benefits across the state,” she said.

“We are years ahead of other host nations in delivering competition venues this far ahead of the Games, which means they can be used by the local community and also attract high-calibre sport and entertainment events.

“There is still more than eight years to go – Sydney 2000 didn’t have a master plan until five years out.”
