The husband of a cosmetic doctor has apologised after admitting he wrote a series of fake one-star Google reviews to harm the business of a rival physician.
Iain McKenzie and his wife Ellen Bolster – described as an “experienced and trusted cosmetic injector” at Brisbane’s B Clinic – have issued a written apology for the untrue and defamatory reviews written about Dr Scott Allison.
And Dr Bolster has expressed her regret at her husband’s actions after the couple were taken to court by Dr Allison.
Mr McKenzie, formerly the practice manager at his wife’s clinic, and Dr Bolster denied writing the reviews when Dr Allison initially began civil action over the defamatory posts.
But Mr McKenzie penned the apology after Dr Allison went to the Federal Court to force Google and Telstra to hand over the identities of the dodgy reviewers, written under the names of Jack Stevens, Jason Turnball, Anthony James and Julia Hawkins.
Dr Allison was able to submit evidence to the court that the reviews were posted from the couple’s home and the clinic where they both worked.
His statement of claim reveals he and Dr Bolster previously worked together at a city medical clinic.
“Between 2019 and 2019, Iain McKenzie published a number of Google reviews about Dr Scott Allison,” read the apology, submitted to the court and signed by Mr McKenzie and Dr Bolster.
“Those reviews were defamatory of Dr Allison and should not have been made.
“Mr McKenzie unreservedly apologises to Dr Allison for the distress, hurt and embarrassment the reviews caused, especially to the extent they damaged Dr Allison’s reputation.”
The reviews made nasty and false allegations about Dr Allison’s character and wrongly claimed his five star reviews had been written by friends.
“Pay no attention to the fluffed up reviews from friends of Dr Allison,” one of the fake reviews read.
“I encourage you to see anyone but him.”
The reviews have since been removed by Google.
“Dr Ellen Karin Bolster does not endorse the content of the reviews and regrets their publication by Mr McKenzie,” the written apology further said.
“Dr Bolster endorses the apology made above by Mr McKenzie. Dr Bolster is deeply sorry for the distress, hurt and embarrassment the reviews caused, especially to the extent they damaged Dr Allison’s reputation.”
Dr Allison did not comment on the issuing of the apology.
