Most people have heard about the ‘Shopping Cart Theory’ - a test of your character by how you answer the simple question: ‘Do you put your trolley back every time?’
It’s a question that was popularised by the New York Times in 2021, and was resurfaced by QWeekend’s Max Futcher in 2023 discussing whether you return your trolley every time, or leave it somewhere else, such as a car park space.

“...it’s a test of how decent a person you are… If you are a good person, you will do it, so as not to inconvenience anyone… if you don’t return it, then it just shows that you don’t care about anyone but yourself” one reader wrote on Futcher’s story.
And while most readers agreed that where you leave your trolley was indeed a test of honesty and decency, there are a number of other everyday tasks that can indicate your level of rudeness.
