A witness has colourfully recalled his alleged assault and dramatic escape from a band of armed attackers near Mackay.

“F---ing animals mate,” Kevin Andrew O’Connor declared in court.

One of the alleged attackers, Alex Colin Blake, 30, sat across the room from Mr O’Connor at a committal hearing in Brisbane Magistrate Court on Roma St on Thursday.

Blake is facing one count each of unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm.

During cross-examination by Blake’s lawyer, Alan Phillips, Mr O’Connor told the court he went to a house in the Mackay suburb of Ooralea to meet a woman on the night of August 28 2020.

He said the woman bolted the door and led him to the bedroom.

Mr O’Connor, 39, said he walked in and heard what sounded like a light bulb blowing.

“Then I just started seeing a few stars going around the light, looked back and seen old mate and his other mate standing in the doorway and smoke coming off the barrel of the gun,” he alleged.

Mr O’Connor, who was not shot, said he grabbed the barrel of the gun and started to tussle with Blake when the other men allegedly “cracked me”.

“Then I noticed he was trying to bite me, had bite marks, f---ing animals mate,” he said in court.

“Then (the woman) was saying stab the c**t, stab him and then she just peppered me jacket.

“I didn’t even know I’d been stabbed till I got to the hospital mate.

“F---ing maggots, like bullsh--.”

Mr O’Connor said he didn‘t know if there was another bullet in the gun.

“I knew if the gun was loaded again I wouldn't have made the distance across (to the front door),” he said.

Mr Phillips asked if Blake did anything to him.

“He told me if I didn‘t shut up he’d shoot me,” Mr O’Connor alleged.

“He told me to get in the bathroom, clean myself up in case the coppers seen me. They weren't letting me out of that house mate, c’mon mate.”

Mr O’Connor managed to flee the home and began knocking on neighbours doors but no one answered, he said.

He ran to a friend’s home, called an ambulance and was taken to hospital where he was discharged the next day.

Blake was committed to stand trial in Mackay’s District Court at a later date.

He was not required to enter a plea and remains in custody.
