An airport worker has been injured by machinery used to load baggage at the Brisbane International Airport on Christmas Eve night.

The male was rushed to hospital from Brisbane Airport with severe leg injuries.

Emergency services got the call just after 8pm on Tuesday after “heavy equipment” caused the accident, according to a spokesman from the Queensland Ambulance Service.

“We are deeply saddened by the injury of a ramp worker on the tarmac at the International Terminal on Christmas Eve,” Brisbane Airport spokesman Peter Doherty said.

“We are working with his employer, Swissport, to understand how this injury occurred.

“Our thoughts are with this young man as he receives ongoing treatment.”

The worker was taken by ambulance from the Brisbane International airside to Royal Brisbane Hospital.

A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokesman said they have been notified of the incident.

“WHSQ have attended the workplace and are making inquiries. As this is a current investigation no further comment can be made at this time,” the spokesman said.

Swissport has since issued a statement.

“Swissport is extremely saddened by the injury sustained by one of our ramp team members at Brisbane International Airport on Tuesday, 24th December.

“Our priority at this time is supporting the well-being of the injured team member and his family as he undergoes treatment. We are also working closely with our other team members and first responders to provide assistance to those in need.

“We are very grateful for the immediate help provided by first responders from the Brisbane Airport community, and the care provided by QAS.

“The safety of our employees is Swissport’s greatest priority. We will be undertaking a full and thorough investigation to identify the cause of the incident.”
