$75m plans unveiled for Catholic colleges in SEQ growth corridors at Flagstone and Fitzgibbon

Brisbane Catholic Education has unveiled $75 million in contracts for a new college at Flagstone and an extension to the Fitzgibbon school, marking a major investment in state-of-the-art facilities.

Brisbane Catholic Education has announced two significant construction projects valued at nearly $75 million unveiling plans for a new private college at Flagstone in Logan and extensions to an existing school at Fitzgibbon.

Both projects, expected to be completed by the end of 2026, represent a substantial investment in educational infrastructure in both regions.

Expressions of interest were advertised this week for qualified and experienced providers to submit tenders.

The largest project, a new school to be called St Bonaventure’s College Flagstone, would cost up to $55 million for stage 1 alone.

BCE bought the 12ha site on Flagstonian Drive in 2017.

It was within developer Peet’s $6.7 billion Flagstone City, one of the biggest new housing zones in Australia.

It would be the area’s first Catholic school and cater for 1800 students from Prep to Year 12.

Greater Flagstone is in the Logan growth corridor, 45km south west of the Brisbane CBD.

There were about 12,000 homes planned to be built by 2047.

The school was to have opened last year but the plans had to go through four stages of approval including the Catholic Church, the Non State School Accreditation Board, the federal government for funding and Logan City Council, delaying plans.

The Non-State Schools Accreditation Board was advised in April, 2023 that the school would be called St Bonaventure’s College.

Flagstone State School and Flagstone Community College already operate in the suburb and plans to build a new state school for Greater Flagstone in 2025 were put on hold until 2028 due to lower enrolments.

The Catholic project at Flagstone Drive would include four new buildings including a student hub, a multipurpose hall, early years general learning block and middle years general learning block.

Each building would have state-of-the-art digital and Wi-Fi technology and amenities.

The plans included a car park and drop-off zone plus crucial site works such as a covered link, shared rescue facilities, refuse areas and bike storage.

The selected contractor was expected to start construction by the end of this year with the project due for completion by term one in 2026.

Providers interested in this project must submit their capability statements and relevant experience by Friday, July 5.

The second project was for the expansion and renovation of Holy Spirit College on Beams Rd, Fitzgibbon in Brisbane’s north.

The stage-three project, valued between $20 million and $27 million, included three new buildings and the extension and refurbishment of existing structures.

New buildings, designated as Blocks D, E, and F, would enhance the college’s capacity and facilities.

Blocks D and E would each feature eight general learning areas, while Block F would house specialist science labs, flexible learning areas, new toilets and amenities.

The project would also include the refurbishment of the existing Block A and a two-storey extension of Block B plus improvements to the car park.

The contractor must be start construction by the end of 2024 and complete it by early 2026.

Interested providers had until July 5 to submit expressions of interest.

Both projects were expected to highlight Brisbane Catholic Education’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities and providing state-of-the-art environments for students and staff.

Brisbane Catholic Education oversees 146 primary and secondary schools with more than 77,000 students.
