THE gates to the Wellcamp Airport will be thrown open to the public on September 28 as part of a community open day to showcase the new airport.
General manager Phil Gregory said the event would be the only chance for the public to see all areas of the airport before it goes operational later this year.
"We're inviting everyone to be part of Australian aviation history as we unveil the first public airport built in Australia in 50 years," Mr Gregory said.
"Most of the construction will be complete by then so guests will be able to tour the terminal and the massive 2.87km runway including access to areas that will be restricted when the airport opens in November.
"There'll be lots of entertainment for the whole family including aerial shows, aircraft displays and live performances by local bands."

Mr Gregory said more than 18,000 people attended the airport's under construction open day in November last year and airport management was expecting even more people this year.
The full open day program will be released closer to the date.
When operational, the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport will be the first major airport to cater for regular public jet services to the Toowoomba and Surat Basin regions.
Potential routes include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns, Mackay, Emerald, Roma and Miles.
