Port property with rich ties to the area set to go under the hammer

It may not look like much but a piece of Port Adelaide’s rich history, located near the iconic Hart’s Mill, is set to go under the hammer.

A historic property and block, being marketed as a developers dream, is up for sale in the Port.

The property on St Vincent St has a rich history and was previously home to the town’s tobacconist.

Later it was embroiled in the Port Adelaide ‘tyre wars’ when tyre giants Goodyears and McLeods were fierce rivals and Goodyear moved fast to secure the rent of the well-located Swansea House.

When the MV Troubridge – a ferry that serviced the South Australian coastal trade between Port Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln – replaced the ketch trade of small cargo vessels, the property was where most of the trucks and semi-trailers from the KI trade got their new boots.

It’s located only metres from the Port River and near historic and popular Hart’s Mill.

The offering has two level allotments of 329sq m each, measuring 35.97m deep with 9.14m frontages.

It’s zoned as an ‘urban activity centre’ to support a range of primary business, shopping and entertainment sectors, so the allotments, which will be sold together, are ripe with redevelopment possibilities for business as well as residential uses.

Ray White agent Andrew Welch said the property had been under the ownership of one family for many years.

“It’s a very unique property and people have said to us it’s a property they always wanted to own,” he said.

“We’ve had a good amount of early interest (in the auction) including from people who own other properties in the Port.”

The price guide on the allotments is around the $600,000 mark.

An auction will be held on-site on Thursday, August 5 at 12.30pm.
