The Gold Coast’s Gemelli empire has added a sweet new offering to its repertoire with the opening of a new gelato shop in Mermaid Beach’s Oxley precinct.
Owned by brothers Alec, James, and Paul Carney - who are behind iconic local eateries Gemelli Broadbeach, Gemellini in Nobby Beach, and Roy’s in Sorrento - Gelato Gemelli is a natural extension of their ethos of authentic Italian cuisine, crafted with care and tradition.
Paul Carney said the brothers have long dreamt of opening a gelateria.
“It’s always been on the radar,” he said.
“We go to Italy most years, and in Sicily, you see how gelato brings people together - it’s fun and works really well with what we’re already doing.”
The brothers have spent years perfecting their gelato-making craft, using Italian-imported equipment, fresh local ingredients, and even pasteurising their own milk.
“It’s all made from scratch using traditional methods we’ve learned. That’s our point of difference,” Paul said.
Gold Coasters can expect a menu packed with “proper Italian flavours,” including creamy pistachio and white chocolate, Queensland mango sorbet, and Sicilian granita made with fresh fruit.
Unique offerings like gelato brioche sandwiches are also on the menu with gelato cakes planned to make a feature in the future.
The Carney brothers’ connection to Italy runs deep, with their grandparents hailing from central Italy.
“We’re lucky to go back each year and bring that knowledge here,” Paul said. “We’ve built our business on doing everything fresh and by hand, and now we’re applying that same ethos to gelato.”
Paul said the gelateria’s launch in late December was a hit, with locals embracing the new venture.
“We pretty much sold everything we made on the first day. People loved it, and we’re only going to get better.”
The location in Nobby Beach holds special meaning for the brothers, who’ve been part of the area’s growth over nearly a decade.
“We know the locals, and this just feels like the perfect fit,” Paul said.
Gelato Gemelli is now open at The Oxley precinct.
