Will Power to race jet in a car

INDYCAR champion Will Power is no stranger to speed but admits he will have to be on top of his game to out-run a Mustang jet.

The Toowoomba-born sporting great landed at Wellcamp Airport today to get the lay of the land before pitting himself against a jet in a race down the runway.

He will test the limits of a V8 supercar (IndyCars are hard to come by in this part of the world) at the airport's open day on Sunday, September 28.

The choice of vehicle might be a sign of things to come for the Wellcamp estate, with whispers about long-term plans to build a V8 Supercar track beside the airport.

"I think if it came to fruition that would be something special. Obviously, it's early days but I've heard the rumours and it would be great for the city," he said.

If it works out, Mr Power said he would be happy to strap on a helmet - and he had another suggestion.

"I think they should consider IndyCars coming here," he joked.

One can always dream.
