THE Brisbane lord mayor's criticism over the naming of Wellcamp Airport took a back seat as the first work on its terminal got under way.

The beginning concrete foundations have been poured for the 8000sq m terminal, which will expand by a further 4500sq m in its second stage of construction.

Construction crews today pumped the first 40 cubic metres of cement into a 54m by 6.5m pit - an underground pedestrian tunnel running the length of the terminal to be predominantly used by baggage handlers.

"We will use 40,000 cubic metres (of cement) in total for the terminal, aprons, runway ends and car parks," Wagners director Denis Wagner said.

"We're on track and still hope to be finished in September for aircraft in October this year."

The Wagner family behind the project was sprayed by Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk this week over the naming of the airport.

It will still be known locally as Wellcamp Airport - internationally, it will be called Brisbane-West Wellcamp.

In a nutshell, Mayor Quirk told the Wagners to get their own name and to leave Brisbane out.

"It has been accepted by CASA and Airservices and we have no intention of changing it," Mr Wagner responded.

"For international travellers, people recognise where Brisbane is within Australia.

"They don't recognise where Wellcamp is.

"We were quite surprised that Brisbane would have any issue with it. We thought they would have seen it as a benefit to the whole region."
