The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash and worked to free a person from a vehicle after it slammed into a power pole on the outskirts of Toowoomba.

A 46-year-old man and sole occupant was found trapped inside the car after it crashed into a power pole about 11.30am on Tuesday along Greenwattle St, Wilsonton Heights.

He was reportedly travelling north when the car collided with the pole, causing the car to spin.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Anzac Ave station officer Shane Rankin said two QFES crews went into action to dismantle part of the wreck and were able to free the man by about 12.11pm.

“Upon arrival we located a single male occupant in the driver’s seat, there was significant damage to the vehicle requiring QFES to use hydraulic rescue tools to remove the side of the vehicle,” he said.

“The extrication was fairly simplistic, removing two doors and the B-pillar.

“Fortunately the driver was not trapped around the leg, if he had been it would have significantly increased the complexity of the job.”

There was a large amount of damage to the driver’s side of the engine compartment and the front wheel well, caused by the impact with the power pole.

Had the man missed the power pole he may have ended up at the bottom of a steep embankment and impacting a nearby home.

Greenwattle St was closed for some time as a result, and the Forensic Crash Unit was also called to the scene.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Stephen Johns said the male patient sustained several injuries including “significant” facial injuries, neck injuries, possible fractures and several lacerations and abrasions to his body.

“He had significant intrusion into the driver’s cab where he’s hit the power pole,” he said.

“It was a very delicate and difficult extrication – thanks to the fire service for their fantastic work in getting that car a part.”

The man also lost consciousness as a result and was transported to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
